In March 2017, following a creative residency in the city of Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde, the HAIKRÉUS project came to fruition.
A book, in a numbered edition and printed at a local print shop, featuring 20 HAIKUS in Portuguese and Creole, in a bilingual edition.
This resulted in 40 large-format, handwritten Post-it notes, also in Creole and Portuguese, which were displayed across the island of São Vicente.
This marks the continuation of the “Post-It Poetry” project.
This will also give rise to a documentary by Gonçalo Pôla, which will record the entire process, from the printing of the book to the display of the posters across the island, in a film he hopes to present next year.
At the same time, a photographic series was produced, capturing the dialogue between the posters and the island,
and exhibited at the CNAD.
Gonçalo Pôla, a Portuguese filmmaker and photographer, took the photographs, with art direction by Gonçalo Santana and Ana Cunha.These HAIKRÉUS (Creole HAIKUS, a term coined by the author) stem from a dialectic between the poetic minimalism of the HAIKU and the linguistic minimalism of Creole; the posters are minimalist, and this is also one of the reasons why the project took place in the city of Mindelo.
The absence of excessive visual clutter on the city’s streets allows the posters, in their simple, monochrome form, to stand out and be read with a singular and striking clarity. The dialogue with the island’s architecture was also a key factor in this photographic series, resulting in a collection of powerful images with broad and ambiguous interpretations, much like this poetic form.
