The sea it seems to contain
all our fears.
It is as much as darkness
as it is light.
__Melville

We dwelve back into raw energy. The sea and the sun as totems of all creation. We return the sea to its creation myth. Provider of all energy. An entropy of the cosmos that provides us life.
Transition is the default state of the sea as it seems to speed upevolution before our eyes. From the ancient to the medieval to the modernist sea, it throws up strange things, then takes back and turns them into something else. From quantum to kinetic to life — entropy of energy.
/Kinetic energy.
//Invisibility. //Propagation.
//Life. //Entropy of energy.
It was JW Turner’s intense vision that turned the sea from the calm composition of classical painters into something sensational and chaotic. It was the moment in which art altered the state of the sea in our heads.
Turner incorporated the mayhem and uproar of his time, of the industrial revolution into his art, and his late paintings of the sea become vortices. Steam-powered or even electrified as much as acts of god. It bears witness along with Herman Melville to the changing meaning of the sea. Under our human sway it shifted from creation myth to economic resource, from faith to exploitation.

We follow the path. The tumult of the digital, the uncanny Valley of creation. Set against the divinity of cosmos and ocean. Reverberating energy. The invisible made visible.
Where did the sea begin? In the past, or in our heads?
Will we save ourselves from the sea?
For centuries it acted as a carbon sink, a cistern of our souls.
We plunder even the deepest ocean
bed to sustain our headlong progress.
And now it is set up
to rise against us.
We ignore the sea at
the peril of our souls.
We reclaim the sea, reinstating its mythical origins as the provider of all energy — an entropy of the cosmos that breathes life into our very existence.
And we return. To creation.
To ourselves. To infinity.
