An Atlantic crossing. Twenty-eight days at sea. Sailing, pushed by the wind. A journey of many miles on the sea and on our inner self. All condensed into an attempt at an image, an attempt at a memory, like a dream. Everything forever, like a cape rounded that bends inwards.
Departing from images (video and photography) collected by the artist during an Atlantic crossing on a sailboat from Martinique, in the Caribbean, to Portugal (May-2022), these were then processed through an Artificial Intelligence engine and Generative design software to create an imagery that results in an immersive, complex and polymorphic visuality of the Ocean and the crossing. Navigating between the real and the digital, between abstraction and visual literality. In a simulation of memory, of time and of the distance of this journey.
In the mechanics of the piece the movement and speed of the images are defined by the intensity of the wind registered during the crossing, using the records of the electronics and the logbook of the vessel over the course of a month. Thus conferring yet another layer of immersion to the experience provided by the work.
An exercise in experimentation and juxtaposition of that which is the human nature of memory, the wilderness most untouched by man — the high seas — and technology. In a dialogue between the natural world and the digital world, recurrent in COTWO's work and which reveals once again the invisible (in this conceptual manifesto of making the invisible visible, which permeates all the work of the collective).
These are the vectors of the equation of this piece, which results in a singular approach to the visual heritage of the sea, of memories and of dreams. The result is a dreamlike landscape with tangents to abstraction, in constant mutation, a poetic and mathematical approach to the sea, to memory and to beauty. A perpetual movement, allusion to infinity, to distance, to the incessant breathing of the sea, waves and wind — the infinite variations of blue. No memory is watertight within us, no memory is defined and clear, no gaze is photographic — they are always contaminated by time, by the brain,
by the emotional quotient. These images are, therefore, faithful representations of that oceanic territory, where freedom, fear reality and memory coexist.
